Why we’d go

This is the Bondi outpost of Newtown's well-regarded Mapo, and it takes its craft seriously: gelato churned without stabilisers or preservatives, held in traditional lidded pozzetti at a precise -11 to -12 degrees, with the recipes reportedly tweaked for Bondi's saltier, more humid seaside air. The line-up leans classic and single-origin (Sicilian pistachio, Piedmont hazelnut, Bolivian chocolate, fior di latte, Pepe Saya sea-salt caramel) rotated with seasonal fruit sorbets. If you want a genuinely good scoop within sight of the sand rather than a mass-market tub, this is our pick on Campbell Parade.

What to order

The Sicilian pistachio and Piedmont hazelnut are the flavours to test a real gelateria on; single-origin Bolivian chocolate and sea-salt caramel for the classics, or a seasonal fruit sorbet if you want something lighter. Take it in a waffle cone.

The atmosphere

Small, design-led shop-front — black track lighting, raw brick and plaster, plywood counters — built for grab-and-go rather than lingering.

Local tip: It's directly across the road from the beach and stays open till 10 or 10:30pm, so we'd grab a cone here after dinner and eat it on the promenade rather than queuing at the more touristy spots.

Worth knowing: It's a compact takeaway counter with essentially no seating and no beach view from inside — you're meant to take your scoop and walk.
