Why we’d go

El Indio does one thing and does it with real conviction: gluten-free white-corn arepas stuffed with slow-cooked meats, plantain, black beans and guacamole, alongside build-your-own corrientazo bowls that come out seriously generous. It's a warm, informal neighbourhood room rather than a view restaurant, and the kitchen is unusually kind to vegetarian and vegan diners, so a mixed table rarely has to compromise. We'd choose it when we want punchy, flavour-forward Latin food a short walk from the sand without a big-night budget.

What to order

Our pick is the arepas — the Bondi Pavillion (beef brisket, plantain, black beans, chimichurri) on the meat side and the vegan Ghandi (eggplant, plantain, black beans, guacamole, hogao) — plus a corrientazo bowl to share; finish with the dulce de leche cheesecake, and time a margarita for happy hour.

The atmosphere

Warm, informal and lively, with a handful of street-facing outdoor tables.

Local tip: Come for the 4–6pm happy hour on arepas and cocktails; if you're arriving for dinner Wednesday to Friday, book ahead because the small room fills fast, though tables turn over quickly.

Worth knowing: Limited trading days and hours (typically closed Monday–Tuesday, dinner-led) and a compact, casual space — this is a quick, cheerful feed, not a leisurely ocean-view sit-down.
