China Diner

Why we’d go

After a decade as a Hall Street favourite, China Diner moved down to the Pacific building overlooking the sand, and the upgrade suits it: moody 1930s-Shanghai styling, an ocean outlook and a kitchen that does contemporary Cantonese with more polish than the "diner" name suggests. We'd choose this when you want a proper sit-down dinner near the beach rather than a quick bite, or for a leisurely Sunday yum cha. The drinks list is a genuine draw, so it works as much for a cocktail-and-dumplings evening as a full meal.

What to order

Our steer is the steamed dumpling selection to start, then the XO king prawns and the twice-cooked crispy chicken; the chicken-and-sesame spring rolls are a signature, and the Sunday yum cha service is the move if you're in on a weekend.

The atmosphere

Dim, moody and cocktail-bar-ish at night, brighter and more relaxed for weekend lunch and yum cha.

Local tip: Book the weekend lunch or Sunday yum cha sitting if you want the beach view in daylight — the evening service leans dark and loungey, so the ocean outlook is more of a night-time backdrop than the main event.

Worth knowing: It sits at the pricier end for the precinct ($$$, mains around the mid-$30s), and the dark, drinks-led evening room is less suited to young kids than the daytime yum cha.
