Restaurant in North Bondi
A moody seaside Japanese izakaya that materialises three nights a week inside North Bondi's Harry's cafe once the roller door comes down after dark.
This is the after-dark alter ego of beloved daytime cafe Harry's, reimagined by the crew behind the Raw Bar (one of eastern Sydney's original Japanese restaurants, going since 1995) with chef Jack New of Edition Coffee Roasters and Izy Izakaya pedigree. The menu leans into premium sashimi, robata-grilled skewers and share plates built on heat, smoke and restraint, served under Japanese films projected onto exposed brick. We'd choose it for a low-lit, grown-up dinner that feels a world away from Bondi's daytime bustle.
Premium sashimi and Hokkaido scallops, robata skewers ("things on sticks") like burnt-honey chicken and miso oyster mushrooms, the lobster tempura sando, and a mochi bomb to finish.
Dim, sultry and intimate — moody lighting, projected old Japanese films on brick, a shelf of sake.
Local tip: RND only runs Friday to Sunday evenings from around 5.30pm, so don't turn up on a weekday expecting izakaya — that same address is just Harry's cafe by day. Book ahead for a weekend table.
Worth knowing: Limited to three nights a week and it's an elevated, small-plates format, so costs add up and it won't suit anyone after a casual weeknight feed.
