Club / Hotel in North Bondi
A 1935-era bowling club a few blocks back from North Bondi, now a lively, dog-friendly bar and bistro with barefoot bowls, cheap pub eats and 18 taps.
We'd choose the Bowlo when we want the un-fussy, un-touristy side of Bondi: it's a genuine community club that's been reinvented for the modern crowd without losing the barefoot-bowls-on-the-green charm. The bistro turns out honest club-pub food (burgers, schnitzels, wings, fish and chips) at prices that undercut the beachfront, and the tap list — 18 lagers, ales, sours, ciders and seltzers — punches well above what a suburban club usually offers. It's one of the few Bondi spots that genuinely welcomes kids, dogs and big groups at the same table.
Our steer is the club-bistro staples: a burger (there's a vegan option), schnitzel, wings or fish and chips with beer-battered fries. Keep an eye out for the rotating specials the club runs — Taco Tuesdays, the burger-and-beer deal and Friday curry nights.
Relaxed, buzzy and social — bowls-green casual, busiest late afternoon into evening.
Local tip: Book a rink of barefoot bowls for a group rather than just rocking up — the green fills fast on warm weekends, and Friday is free bowls with a happy hour. Note it's closed Mondays.
Worth knowing: It's a few blocks inland with no ocean view, and it's a club bistro rather than a destination kitchen — come for the value and vibe, not fine dining.
Hours, prices and menus change — always check the venue’s own site before you go. Spotted something out of date? We keep this directory current; details reflect our last check.
