Why we’d go

This is one of the genuine Bondi Road institutions — owner Barry Rallis has been running it for nearly three decades and still does the early-morning Sydney Fish Market run himself. It's more than a chip shop: alongside proper battered fish and chips there's a wet fishmonger counter and cooked dishes that stray happily into grilled and Asian-influenced territory. We'd choose this when you want dinner sorted without a sit-down restaurant — either a takeaway parcel or raw fish to cook at home.

What to order

Classic battered fish and chips is the anchor; look also to the grilled and marinated fish (think chilli-lemongrass barramundi), salads and the raw/fishmonger selection if you're cooking at home.

The atmosphere

Unpretentious neighbourhood seafood shop, more counter-and-collect than dining room.

Local tip: Our tip: it doubles as a fishmonger, so you can buy fillets to cook yourself rather than only ordering fried — handy for a self-catered night near the beach. It's a short walk up Bondi Road from the sand, not on Campbell Parade.

Worth knowing: It's up Bondi Road rather than beachfront, and it's a takeaway/counter operation — no view or table service to speak of.
