Why we’d go
This is the kind of unfussy neighbourhood workhorse we'd point you to when you want a proper feed without the Campbell Parade prices or the wait for a table. The Char has been roasting free-range birds on Bondi Road since 2012, and the draw is as much the rotating wall of up to 17 house-made salads as the chicken itself, so a single stop can cover a whole family dinner. It has since grown to Bronte and Rose Bay, which tells you the locals keep coming back.
What to order
A whole free-range rotisserie chicken (the Portuguese-style bird cooked flat with peri peri, garlic, Greek or Thai sauce is the signature), paired with a couple of the daily salads and hot chips.
The atmosphere
No-frills counter-service takeaway; you order, you go.
Local tip: Grab a whole chicken and a few salads to take down to the beach or Bondi Park for an easy sunset picnic rather than eating in — there's no real dining room here.
Worth knowing: This is takeaway and catering, not a sit-down restaurant — there's no ocean view or table service, so it's a provisioning stop rather than a night out.
