Why we’d go

This is the kind of quirky neighbourhood institution Bondi is quietly losing, and we'd send you here for the experience as much as the food: big round tables, a sprawling Chinese-Malaysian-Indonesian menu, and a karaoke set-up that turns a group dinner into a proper night. It is cheap, cheerful and unpretentious — the opposite of the beach's polished new arrivals. Come with a crowd and a sense of humour rather than fine-dining expectations.

What to order

Lean into the crowd-pleasers the regulars order — crab and sweet corn soup, chicken with cashew nuts, seafood combination, prawn cutlets and a sweet-and-sour — plus a few of the Malaysian-Indonesian plates that set the menu apart from a standard suburban Chinese.

The atmosphere

Warm, no-frills and unapologetically retro, tipping into rowdy once the karaoke starts

Local tip: Book a table if you're bringing a group — it's a favourite for birthdays and work dinners precisely because of the karaoke, and the room fills on weekends.

Worth knowing: Reviews are genuinely mixed on food and service, and one directory currently carries a "temporarily closed" flag — call ahead on 02 9300 0487 to confirm before you head over; opening is dinner-only.
