Rain or Shine: 7 Must-Do Indoor Activities in Bondi Beach on a Rainy Day

When the rain rolls in off the Tasman and the flags come down at Bondi, I don't head home - I move the day indoors. So what is there to do in Bondi Beach on a rainy day? Plenty. Between the Pavilion's galleries, a long lunch above the pool, café-hopping and the undercover world of Bondi Junction, a wet day here is often one of my favourites. Here are the seven I keep coming back to.

1. Bondi Pavilion - art, theatre and pottery under one roof

The restored Bondi Pavilion is the first place I send anyone caught in a downpour. Right on the promenade, this heritage building reopened in 2022 after a major restoration and now holds an art gallery, a theatre, music studios, a pottery studio and the Bondi Story Room. Programming rotates constantly, so check the Waverley Council Pavilion page for what's on - and the galleries are free to wander.

2. A long lunch at Icebergs, dry above a churning sea

There's no better place to watch a storm than the dining room and bar at Icebergs, on the top level of 1 Notts Avenue above the famous ocean pool. It's a celebrated Italian restaurant with floor-to-ceiling views, and on a wild day the waves crashing over the pool below are pure theatre. 3. Café-hopping through North Bondi

Rain is the perfect excuse to slow down over coffee, and Bondi's café scene is genuinely world-class - if you want to plan a proper crawl, our full guide to Bondi's best cafés and coffee maps out where to go. I'll linger over eggs and a flat white at Porch & Parlour on Ramsgate Avenue, or grab a corner at Speedos Café up the North Bondi end and watch the wet promenade go by.

4. A wellness reset - massage, sauna or a yoga class

A grey day is tailor-made for self-care. Bondi is full of day spas, massage studios and yoga schools where you can book a treatment or drop into a class while the rain empties the streets. Rather than name prices that change, find a studio near your accommodation and book directly.

5. Read, borrow or just shelter at Waverley Library

One of Bondi's best rainy-day secrets is free: Waverley Library at the Ron Lander Centre in Bondi Junction. It's a lovely public library with quiet reading nooks, a big children's section, newspapers and free Wi-Fi - a no-pressure spot for families or anyone who wants to dry off with a book. 6. Lose an afternoon in a bookshop-café at Gertrude & Alice

When I want to disappear from the weather entirely, I head to Gertrude & Alice on Hall Street - a much-loved Bondi bookshop-café stacked floor to ceiling with new and secondhand books, with communal tables, good coffee and cake. 7. Retail therapy, all undercover

When you just want to stay bone dry for hours, Westfield Bondi Junction is the answer - hundreds of shops, food courts and cafés under one roof with the transport interchange right there. It's a short bus ride from the sand on the 333 or 380, so you can duck out the moment the sky clears.

So don't write off a rainy day in Bondi. Some of my best afternoons started with the flags coming down - a gallery, a long lunch and a good book. Rain or shine, this corner of Sydney always has somewhere dry to be.
