Top Things to Do in Bondi for Kids During School Holidays

Every school holidays I get the same question from friends visiting with kids: what actually keeps them happy in Bondi all day? The short answer is that you barely need a plan - a learn-to-surf lesson in the morning, a splash at a rock pool, and a walk along the cliffs with a play stop built in will fill a day easily. Here's how I'd string it together, plus the rainy-day backups I lean on when the weather turns.

Bondi's south end, near the Icebergs, is where the waves are gentlest and the surf schools set up. Let's Go Surfing runs kids' lessons and school-holiday programs with qualified instructors and soft foam boards, so even a nervous first-timer usually stands up before the session's out. Check their site for current age brackets, session times and prices - these change with the seasons, so I won't quote a figure here.

Whatever you do, swim between the red and yellow flags. Bondi has strong rips, and the flagged zone is the patrolled area the lifeguards are actively watching. If you're unsure about conditions, ask a lifeguard - they'd far rather you asked.

Playgrounds, pools and the coastal walk

When little legs need a break from the sand, there's plenty within a short stroll or drive:

• Bondi to Bronte coastal walk - a scenic clifftop path of roughly two and a half kilometres, with rock pools and beaches to peer into along the way. Bronte's playground and grassy park at the far end make a perfect turnaround-and-picnic point.
• Bondi Icebergs ocean pool - the famous seawater pool at the south end has a shallow children's pool alongside the main one. Session times and entry fees vary, so check the Icebergs website before you set out.
• Wild Play Garden, Centennial Park - a short drive away, this nature playground has a water-play area, a treehouse, bamboo forest and dry creek bed. Bring a change of clothes; someone always ends up soaked.

Council programs and rainy-day backups

Waverley Council runs a genuinely good school-holiday program each break - think art and craft workshops, sport clinics, science and STEM sessions, and activities based at Bondi Pavilion, the library and the Margaret Whitlam Recreation Centre. It's the first thing I'd check when you know your dates: the timetable and bookings go up ahead of each holiday period on the council's events page, and popular sessions fill fast.

For a wet day, the restored Bondi Pavilion is a lovely place to duck into for creative workshops and exhibitions, and Westfield Bondi Junction - a short bus ride away - has a cinema that usually screens kids' films through the holidays. Both are easy, low-stress fallbacks when the forecast lets you down.
