Should I Visit Bondi or Manly?

How you arrive shapes each day. Manly's big drawcard is the ferry from Circular Quay - gliding out past the Opera House and Harbour Bridge across open water is one of Sydney's great cheap thrills, and a reason to visit on its own. Bondi has no ferry; the usual route is a train to Bondi Junction and then a bus down the hill, with the 333 and 380 the services most visitors use. Manly feels more like a relaxed beach town: a walkable village of shops and eateries along the palm-lined Corso from the ferry wharf to the ocean, with a slower, family-holiday air. If you want energy and a scene, lean Bondi. If you want to exhale, lean Manly.

Surf and swimming

Both are proper ocean surf beaches patrolled by lifeguards, and both catch out visitors with rip currents. Bondi faces the open Pacific and usually has something to ride, plus the famous Bondi Icebergs ocean pool in the southern rocks. If you'd trade a little of that buzz for a memorable harbour ferry, a calmer pace and an easy swimming cove, go to Manly. If you have two days, do both. Whichever you choose, swim between the flags and plan your transport before you set off.
