Yes - there are free public electric barbecues at all three beaches, and the best of them sit at Bronte Park, Tamarama and the north end of Bondi. They're the push-button kind maintained by Waverley Council, and on a good weekend they're the beating heart of the coast: sausages sizzling, kids everywhere, someone's uncle guarding the hotplate. Bronte Park - the family favourite
If you only pick one, make it Bronte. The park curves behind the beach in a big green amphitheatre, with the barbecues among picnic shelters and shady grass, and the playground and Bronte Baths a short toddle away. It's my pick for families - you cook, the kids run, and there's a saltwater pool for the post-lunch swim. There are only a couple of hotplates, though, so on a sunny Saturday they go early.

Tamarama - small, scenic and underrated
Little Tamarama - "Glamarama" to the regulars - has barbecue facilities tucked behind the beach, with sheltered tables and that dramatic view up the gully. It's a smaller beach and park, which is exactly why I like it: fewer hotplates, but far fewer people fighting for them than at Bondi or Bronte. There's a little playground in the gully and a grassy slope made for a rug.
North Bondi - barbecues with the big view
The northern end of Bondi is where the barbecues cluster, on the grassy foreshore near the children's playground and skate area. It's the spot for a bigger group - the most cooking capacity of the three, ocean pools nearby, and that full sweep of Bondi in front of you. It's also the busiest, so start early.

How to actually get a hotplate
The barbecues are free and there's no booking - genuinely first-come, first-served. On a warm weekend or public holiday the good ones are gone by mid-morning, so if a cook-up is the plan, get there early and hold the fort.
