If you ask me where to take kids for a big, joyful morning near Bondi, my answer never changes: the rebuilt playground at Waverley Park, up the hill in Bondi Junction. It's the one with the rocket ship - and it has a fair claim to being the best playground in Sydney. This spot has drawn kids for generations: Waverley Park was home to one of the last of Sydney's original 1960s 'Moon Rocket' slippery dips, and when the playground was rebuilt in 2023 the council made sure that space-age spirit came back with it.

The rocket ship everyone comes for
The centrepiece is a bespoke, multi-storey rocket ship with a launch tower and mission-control station - a modern tribute to the beloved 1960s original. Designed by Proludic and craned into place on 20 October 2023 as part of a $1.7 million upgrade funded through the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program, it's a proper piece of imaginative play, not a slide with a paint job. Press the launch button and 'steam' (harmless water vapour) billows out for a genuine-looking blast-off. There's a control panel of knobs and dials for little commanders, and a climb up through the tower that feels like an achievement before kids reach the big slide at the top. My nephews would happily launch that rocket a hundred times in a row.
What lifts it above the average playground is how well it works across ages. Older kids test themselves on the tower and rope climb while little ones potter safely nearby - exactly what you want with siblings in tow. Beyond the rocket you'll find:

In summer I'd aim for morning or late afternoon over the middle of the day, when the metal slides bake.
