Soaring High at Bondi Beach: Festival of the Winds

Imagine colourful kites of all shapes and sizes filling the sky, soaring gracefully above the golden sands of Bondi Beach. This awe-inspiring sight has been a tradition for over four decades, and it all began in 1978 when a group of wind energy enthusiasts decided to host a kite festival. Little did they know that their passion project would grow into one of the world’s most renowned kite flying events.

The Birth of a Legacy

At the heart of this festival is John Silk, a local from Glebe and a student at Sydney University, whose fascination with wind energy led him to fall in love with kite making and flying. Alongside his friends, they saw Bondi’s Springtime charm as the perfect backdrop for their dream. On September 10, 1978, they launched the first Festival of the Winds, with Mr. Ernie Page, the Mayor of Waverley at the time, officially opening the event.

Kite-Flying Extravaganza

Today, the Festival of the Winds is a delightful blend of professional kite flying exhibitions featuring national and international talent, alongside a cornucopia of entertainment and cultural experiences. Bondi Pavilion cultural staff add their touch to the festival by organizing food stalls, kite-making workshops, gallery exhibitions, and more.

Fun for All Ages

The Festival of the Winds is a true family affair. People of all ages can celebrate the joy of kite flying and even craft their own sky-high creations at one of the kite-making workshops. The day is filled with captivating demonstrations, and the main stage hosts a lively entertainment program that keeps spirits high.
