I've lived and swum around this coast for years, and Bronte is one spot where the 'it looks fine' instinct gets people badly hurt.

I understand the temptation. Bronte is one of the prettiest little beaches on the eastern suburbs coastline - a grassy park, a gorgeous ocean pool, sandstone headlands framing the bay. On a hot day the deep-looking water off the rocks looks like an invitation. But what you can't see from the top is what makes cliff and rock jumping here a bad idea.

Why jumping the cliffs at Bronte is so risky

Bronte packs several hazards into a very small bay. The beach is known for strong, fast-moving rip currents - the famous 'Bronte Express' rip that can drag you out along the southern rocks. Below the cliffs the depth changes constantly with the tide and swell, so a spot that looks deep on one wave is shallow on the next, with submerged and barely-covered rocks in between. Add surging water that pushes you sideways into the rock shelf, and even a confident swimmer can be in trouble fast.

The safer ways to cool off at Bronte

Here's the good news: Bronte gives you brilliant, safe ways to get in the water without gambling on the rocks. My honest advice is to skip the jumping entirely and use what the beach was practically built for.

• Bronte Baths - the historic ocean pool carved into the rocks at the southern end, dating back to the 1880s. It's one of Sydney's most beautiful sea pools and free to use.
• The Bogey Hole - a natural rock pool beside the baths where locals and kids paddle. It's calmer than the open surf, but still respect the swell when waves are washing over the rocks.
• The flagged area on the beach - swim between the red-and-yellow flags where the lifeguards can see you. Bronte has one of Australia's longest-running surf lifesaving traditions for a reason.
• The Bondi-to-Bronte coastal walk - if it's the clifftop views you're chasing, walk the path rather than leaping off it.

None of this is me being a killjoy. Bronte is one of my favourite beaches in Sydney precisely because it's a bit wild - the surf has real power and the setting is stunning. But that same power is exactly why the smart move is to swim between the flags, float in the baths, and admire the cliffs from the coastal path rather than the air.

So, can you jump from the cliff at Bronte? You physically can - but you really shouldn't. Come for the pool, the Bogey Hole, the walk and the view, keep your feet on the sandstone, and you'll leave Bronte with the good kind of memories.
